Academic Activities

Our main academic activities, held throughout the year:

Alumni Talks

Alumni Talks is a series where we invite TIU Alumni to share their knowledge and experience with the student body. TIU Alumni are one of the greatest untapped resources for the IR community, hence the IRSA hopes to bridge the gap between them and the student body.

The talks usually cover advice to students, such as what to consider when deciding on a thesis topic, tips and tricks to discover your research passion, academic writing and research, how to get published, and how to approach different platforms such as journals, news portals, organizations, etc.

Study and Research Groups

As the representative of the IR student body, we wish to help IR students approach the subject by providing a friendly and approachable platform for students to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and ask questions. Every week, we hold informal study groups for students to discuss, assist one another with IR (and personal) problems, and connect.

During exam seasons, we also organize cram groups to revise class knowledge together, ensuring all students can grasp the basic knowledge taught in classes, thus enhancing the overall output of TIU IR students.

Reading Groups

The TIU IRSA sponsored Reading Group offers a platform for like-minded students to gather, read, and discuss books, articles, and reading materials relating to a topic that you are passionate about. The Reading Group is not only a space for leisure reading but for active engagement in academic discussions in order to deepen the understanding and knowledge of all participants. Registering a Reading Group with TIU IRSA signals a commitment on the part of the Chair of the Reading Group and its participants in contributing substantively to the accumulative knowledge base of the IR department here at TIU. In turn, TIU IRSA will provide support wherever possible to the Reading Group in terms of finding resources, group promotion, administrative issues, and inviting Professors to join your discussion.

Global Dialogue Discussion Group

The TIU Global Dialogue is a speaker series organized by Tokyo International University’s (TIU) E-Track International Relations program. Established in 2019, the TIU Global Dialogue brings top experts, academics, and policy practitioners from the many fields of international affairs—politics, diplomacy, military, economics, and industry—to TIU to share research findings and discuss issues of strategic importance to Japan and the world.

To assist students in deeply engaging with the seminars, we encourage students to write opinion editions following each session and publicize those that are up to standard on our student bulletin. From 2024, we also host post-event informal discussion groups for students to exchange ideas, seek clarification, and delve deeper into the topics covered.

Undergraduate Paper Series

Established in 2021, the Undergraduate Papers Series (UPS) is an annual academic journal featuring excellent papers authored by International Relations students and performance highlights of the TIU School of IR. Every year, we carefully select 3 best papers, reviewed by the Faculty, from all submissions to publish in our journal. Through UPS, we aim to cultivate a robust writing culture among TIU IR students by providing a platform to showcase high-quality academic writing and offering invaluable insight into the professional publication process in the academic world.
